INSTITUT FÜR CHEMIE -
Bereich Analytische Chemie

TUIDER/09.11.2005

The Analytical Chemistry section of the Institute of Chemistry at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz, Austria has the responsibility to instruct students in the analytical chemistry of elements, inorganic compounds and organometallic compounds. The teaching program consists of lectures, instruction in the laboratory, and seminars. Classical methods of qualitative and quantitative analyses are taught during the first three semesters. Instrumental methods of analysis are the subject of instruction toward the end of a student's tenure at the University. Students majoring in chemistry, biology, microbiology, and earth sciences and students preparing themselves for a high school teaching career in chemistry take lecture and laboratory courses in analytical chemistry. The opportunity to carry out research in analytical chemistry required for a Master's degree (Magisterium) or a doctoral degree is offered.

Major research items are trace analysis and the development of methods for the determination of chemical species of elements (speciation analysis) and their application to actual problems of industry, medicine, and the environment. The following instruments are available within the analytical chemistry section for these research endeavours
.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers with dedicated HPLC systems (HPLC-ICPMS)
Laser Ablation System
LC/MS with electrospray ionisation and chemical ionisation
Ion chromatograph
Electroanalytical devices for polarography, voltammetry, amperometry, and potentiometry
Atomic absorption spectrometers for flame, graphite furnace and hydride generation analyses
Capillary electrophoresis
Microtomes/Microscopes
Equipment for classical analytical methods
Arbeitsgruppe EAS (Elektroanalytik und Sensoren) Arbeitsgruppe USA (Umwelt- und Spurenanalytik)
